We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization for the sole purpose of maintaining the integrity of both the 1827 and 1858 light towers and the house sites of the Cape Romain Light Station located on the coastline near McClellanville, SC.
The Cape Romain Light Station was active from 1827 to 1947 using a series of lighting systems that evolved over time. Its purpose was to help mariners avoid the treacherous shoals located three miles off the beach at Cape Romain.
After the station was decommissioned, the property was conveyed to the adjacent Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. The abandoned station received no funding for maintenance until 1987 when a grant was acquired to stabilize both towers. By then, the houses no longer existed.
In recent years, the original cast iron stairs in the tall tower have begun to fail -- visitors are no longer allowed inside.
The Preservation Society has received a proposal for the installation of a temporary exterior stair tower on the north face of the 1858 tower to allow for work on the masonry at the top, followed by the removal of the failing cast iron staircase and its replacement.
Our focus now will be on raising the funds for the external access staircase.
